Promise After School is an after school program that provides academic, social and emotional support to students in the Hudson City School District, from Kindergarten through their senior year of high school. The Promise After School Program employs a strengths-based philosophy and works with students on an individual basis to help manage assignments and set achievable goals for themselves. Positive rewards systems are utilized to motivate students work towards higher standards. On average, Promise After School serves 20 children and adolescents from the Hudson City School District per day.
Operating on a drop-in basis, students are welcome Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. At GHPN, students have access to a computer lab and laptop computers and Chromebooks to ensure that they have the necessary materials to conduct research and complete assignments.
In addition to tutoring and homework assistance from Hudson Promise Corps volunteers and GHPN staff, students also receive a hot meal each day. After school assignments are completed, various age appropriate activities are available.
Children who enroll in Promise After School are also eligible for a number of free trips and programs through our partnerships. This year, we enrolled students in 4-H clubs, the Harmony Project, Hudson Sloop Club, the Community Garden with Kite's Nest, Kids Can Cook with Hawthorne Valley Farm, and many more. We also take frequent field trips to the Hudson Area Library and local parks. The program seeks to provide children with as many enriching opportunities as possible, year round.
The program also provides an excellent opportunity for adolescents through our Youth Volunteer Initiative, where they earn volunteer hours and incentives by interacting with, tutoring, and mentoring younger students. Seventh and eighth graders who participate have expressed feeling more responsible and respected, and mature. By employing youth volunteers, we are able to engage a diverse age group and instill values of community service and positive socialization.
