#JusticeForGeorgeFloyd
The guilty verdict issued on Tuesday, April 20th, 2021 elicits a wide range of overwhelming emotions for our community and the world, particularly for communities that have been historically impacted by racism and systemic police violence. GHPN honors, and acknowledges the wide range of emotions brought to bear by this verdict. While the outcome feels pivotal, momentous, and just, we also recognize that a conviction may not feel like justice. George Floyd’s life cannot be brought back, nor can any of the other individuals’, disproportionately people of colors, whose lives were taken during traffic stops, search warrants, or walks home. We hope that this verdict can be the impetus for much needed, large-scale change and we recognize that much more work needs to be done.
The Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood Inc. remains committed to uprooting systemic racism through policy initiatives and direct programming to serve individuals and families impacted by the criminal justice system. This week for example, our Hudson staff can be found participating in the National Children of Incarcerated Parents Annual Conference, providing direct mentorship to individuals recently released from jail and prison, assisting individuals looking to enroll in college and speaking at a press conference voicing our support for legislation that will further challenge the Prison Industrial Complex. We stand with the leaders and other community organizations across the nation to work together for systemic change that can make our lives more equitable for all.
